Owen - Yes, actually people are quite flattered when I tell them about my project and seem happy to have their house number photographed. Once they figure out I'm not a criminal casing the joint, that is.
My stock answer for curious onlookers is: "I'm researching typography on buildings." Which is kinda true. Though what I think I'm really doing is collecting stories.
Researching typography... well that gives them something to chew on for a while. You could always tell them that you are a primordial hunter gatherer of symbolic numerals, seeking the combination to an ancient code...
Do you get many people asking what on earth you are taking pictures of their numbers for ?
